Personal health and well-being was and is important for all individuals. This includes the way people are living, what they do to stay healthy as well as a profound, well-informed diagnosis and appropriate treatment in case of disease. To achieve these goals, modern medicine is provided with a large variety of tools to assess a patient's health state and collect the information required for a proper diagnosis and treatment, which is tailored to the patient's needs. Many of these available tools use signals either generated by the human body, for example, electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG), or by interacting with the human body while traversing it like microwaves or reflected visible light that is recorded by a video camera. The biosignals recorded by the available and newly developed methods have to be processed to extract the information about the patient's condition and, analyzed tissue and cells. This book presents a small selection of the recent developments in the field of biosignal processing. The covered diagnostic tools and methods include the assessment of respiratory state through gait analysis, the contactless monitoring of cardiovascular and respiratory parameters using microwaves, a non-linear approach to extract the fetal ECG from non-invasive abdominal recordings, identification of epileptic networks from pre-surgical neurophysiological recordings and an improved method to obtain and validate the copy number alterations parameter, which are considered an important marker in cancer classification.

With the changing composition of societies, there is growing consideration of questions of social diversity and equal access to healthcare for minority groups. Despite raised attention to this topic in recent years, there are still debates regarding implementation of healthcare equality in practice. Therefore, the aim of the contributions presented in this volume is a better understanding of the phenomenon of inequity and discrimination of minority groups in accessing healthcare from interdisciplinary perspectives of medical ethics, public health, and law. Obra que atende a estudantes e a profissionais da saúde não especialistas em bioética, mas interessados em conhecê-la, visto que normalmente se sentem profundamente incomodados com os problemas de sua prática habitual que apresentam interface com questões de natureza ética. Propõe-se a oferecer ao leitor um panorama da bioética em duas perspectivas: a da disciplina acadêmica e a do saber aplicado a diversos problemas relacionados ao cotidiano das práticas em saúde. E mais: busca expor a bioética como saber capaz de construir uma nova ponte entre a prática clínica e a prática em saúde pública. Se, por um lado, é difícil perseguir a originalidade quando se assume a tarefa de resumir um campo para leitores neófitos, por outro, esse é sempre um exercício à espera de ser feito, ainda mais em áreas tão interdisciplinares quanto é a bioética. Nesse sentido, o livro cumpre o prometido: de fácil leitura, convida à reflexão, ampliando as fronteiras do pensamento para quem tem o dever de exercitar a dúvida em situações como as provocadas pelo aborto, por exemplo, em que as crenças religiosas dos profissionais da saúde costumam se sobrepor aos deveres da assistência em saúde. Outro dado interessante: talvez por ser um campo tão aberto e com múltiplas fronteiras disciplinares, os autores deram preferência por não definir a bioética. Apresentaram-na por seu objeto de pesquisa e espaço de atuação, não por meio de conceitos. Para o público a que se dirige, essa pode ser uma estratégia eficaz, pois o aproximará pela experiência e não pela abstração da teoria.

Cada capítulo va dedicado por los autores/as a profesionales hombres y mujeres que quieren profundizar en la temática del libro: ética y bioética en diversas disciplinas sanitarias, para conocer y respetar a cabalidad el cumplimiento de los códigos y la normatividad, en espacios en los que les corresponde su accionar y a quienes en una u otra orilla cumplen con sus debe- res y defienden sus derechos en pro de la dignidad humana. En los escritos se evidencia que sus aportes se derivan de sus estudios, de sus lecturas, de su experiencia, de sus relaciones dialógicas en la práctica clínica y saberes académicos en su trayectoria como docentes en Educación Superior.
